Socket Communications claims to have developed the world's smallest commercially available Ethernet card, for use for Windows CE-based Palm-size PCs.
In the CompactFlash form factor, the Low Power Ethernet Card has "less surface area than a book of matches", according to Felix Wong from distributors Advanced Portable Technologies.
"Over-the-cable data transfer rate for the LP-E Card is 10 megabits per second -- 500 times faster than a Palm-size PC's serial port," according to Wong.
The card is also claimed to be energy efficient, requiring 60 milliwatts to operate; a typical PC Card uses 10 to 20 times more power.
Socket aims to transfer the low power technology to its PC Card version, and release further I/O devices in the CoompactFlash form factor.
