Monash University has installed a $2 million network measurement and billing system to manage students' Internet usage.
Call accounting software specialist Phoneware Communications Systems - a subsidiary of Melbourne-based Sirius Telecommunications - has just completed implementing "Australia's first, fully automatic university network data measurement and billing system" at Monash, coinciding with the start of the student year this week, company officials said.
Sirius' managing director Roger Mason said that over the past two years the vendor has invested more than $2 million in developing the system for the South East Melbourne-based university.
"We identified that capabilities to manage Internet usage by individual students were virtually non-existent," Mason said.
"[Our] strategy is to exploit the growing demand for convergent technologies as more organizations move to Internet Protocol networks and need the ability to allocate costs for data usage," he said.
