Samsung Electronics said it has developed a new type of screen for cell phones that it says can be more easily read outdoors on a sunny day.
Samsung created the LCD (liquid crystal display) screen by changing a few aspects of a typical screen. Instead of using aluminum to create reflection, Samsung used silver, which it says is more reflective. The company also created a new reflective lens that improves the rate at which light is concentrated into pixels.
Samsung also made the improvements by using transflective instead of transmissive panels. That means the screen is lit from the front and back, not just from behind. The method uses natural outside light to make the screen brighter and also to conserve on power consumption.
Samsung said that the technology is three times as reflective as typical mobile screens and can be produced at the same cost as regular screens. The company, which announced the new development on Thursday, did not say when the new screens would become available.
