Telstra has announced the upgrade of its Next G network to support a peak uplink speed of 5.8 megabits per second (Mbps).

Previously capable of a peak uplink speed of 1.9Mbps, Telstra claims real-world upload speeds will now be typically between 300 kilobits per second and 3Mbps. Earlier in the year, Telstra upgraded Next G's maximum downlink speed to 21Mbps.

The new uplink speed will be available in all capital cities, metropolitan areas and selected regional locations across Australia — provided users have a 5.8Mbps-rated device.

"Our customers are already used to very fast mobile broadband download speeds and now they will be able to send e-mails and upload files and photos up to three times faster," said Telstra's Michael Rocca.

Telstra's Turbo 21 Modem is the first device to support the boost in uplink speeds, but it requires a software upgrade. Telstra stated that upgrades to other selected Telstra and BigPond devices will be available in "coming weeks".
