TomTom today launched its much-anticipated car kit for the iPhone in Australia. A docking mount that attaches an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G to any car windscreen, the TomTom car kit for iPhone also includes a built-in GPS chipset that the company claims enhances the iPhone's often-erratic navigation performance.
The TomTom car kit for iPhone will work with any GPS navigation application available in the iPhone App Store — in addition to TomTom's own app, the car kit will work with Navigon, Sygic, CoPilot and NDrive navigation apps.
The iPhone car kit uses the same EasyPort mounting system employed by most of TomTom's portable in-car navigation devices, including the TomTom Start and TomTom ONE 140 models.
"The TomTom car kit for iPhone has been designed with safety and quality in mind," said Chris Kearney, TomTom's marketing manager. "Its range of cutting-edge features will ensure the most optimised driving and navigation experience with the TomTom for iPhone app."
The TomTom car kit for iPhone can be rotated to portrait or landscape modes, includes a built-in loud speaker and microphone and charges a connected iPhone when plugged in using the included car-charger. The car kit also includes an auxiliary output to wire sound to your vehicle's car stereo. It will stream audio via Bluetooth if you have a car kit installed, but an FM transmitter is not included.
The TomTom car kit for iPhone is available through selected retailers and the Apple Store for $159.99.
