Sony debuts 3D sound for home theaters

It's not only TVs that can offer 3D at home. Sony's 5.1 speaker system aims to bring aural enjoyment in multiple dimensions.

Sony introduced three new upcoming products for its audio lineup this Wednesday, all of which offer to bring so-called 3D sound to the home.

These new 3D audio products, which are a first for Sony, include two soundbars and a home theater system. Going by the names of HT-CT150 and HT-CT350, the two soundbars will provide 3.1 3D audio, with the HT-SF470 home theater system offering up 5.1 3D delights.

All three of these offerings are surprisingly reasonably priced. The 340-watt HT-CT150 will set you back just US$300, and is a soundbar designed to attach to Sony's 2010 32-inch Bravia TVs. The HT-CT350, which comes in at $400, is designed to match Sony sets that are 40 inches or larger. The final new offering, the HT-SF470 will set buyers back $550 and features a 1000-watt 5.1 surround sound system. Those who choose to pick up the top-of-the-line model will get wireless floor-standing front and rear speakers, a subwoofer, an HDMI repeater, 3 HDMI inputs, and more.

Home theater fanatics who decide to complete their 3D home experience with Sony's new offerings will experience three dimensions of sound, as Sony's speakers work by widening the typical stereo image produced by two loudspeakers. This then creates an overall aural illusion giving the general impression of depth. This technological trickery makes your ears think that the sound is coming from anywhere in the room, be that above, below or behind the listener.

All models feature 3D pass-through and are designed to integrate fully with Sony's range of Blu-ray players and Bravia television sets. The two soundbars are due to launch in May, with the home theater system arriving later in June. All of the new audio goodies will be available online, or in Sony Style and other select stores.
