Samsung welcomes free-to-air 3D broadcast

State of Origin 3D broadcasts on Channel Nine "a landmark occasion"

Samsung is the first manufacturer to release 3D televisions to the Australian market.

Samsung is set to be the only manufacturer to have 3D TVs on the Australian market in time for Channel Nine's 3D broadcast of the State of Origin. The manufacturer is predicting high demand for its 3D sets from fans keen on testing a new way of watching sport.

“Being first to market, we will also be the first TV through which Australians can enjoy this 3D broadcast experience. [It will be] a landmark occasion in Australian broadcasting history,” said Samsung Australia’s Head of Marketing, Mark Leathan.

One of the concerns over 3D TV has been the lack of content available to take advantage of the televisions' capabilities, but sports broadcasters have taken the lead so far with ESPN and Discovery announcing 3D sports channels. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will also be captured in 3D — SBS is investigating broadcasting requirements for televising one match in 3D, but no further information has been released.

Leathan said the Origin announcement shows there is significant interest from local broadcasters in delivering 3D content.

Harvey Norman, official sponsor of the State of Origin, is also eager to drive 3D TV sales with 3D in-store demo stations to be open during the game nights.
