Location-based Twitter app comes to Android

Tweetsii aggregates content from multiple sources and adds location

Mobile social-networking company GyPSii has released an upgraded version of its Tweetsii application for the iPhone, and also added a version for Android, it said on Wednesday.

Before GyPSii started developing Tweetsii, the company looked at what was happening in the Twitter market and saw that there was an opportunity to enhance the creation of content around Twitter and also better connect that to the user's location, according to Shane Lennon, senior vice president for strategy at GyPSii.

So Tweetsii does everything a standard Twitter client does, but it adds location and aggregates information from other sources, including content from Gowalla, Foursquare and GyPSii's own social network.

Users can, for example, view all the information in a so-called HereNow stream, which uses location data to show the user what is happening nearby. They can also check places, that are either user-created or come from public databases, that they visit, and send enhanced messages that are structured as tips or alerts, adding photos and videos later, according to Lennon.

The company first rushed out a version of Tweetsii for the iPhone in March in order to get some feedback, according to Lennon.

The new iPhone version comes with an improved user interface. The upgraded client also comes with better search features, according to Lennon. When a user searches for a bar, historic spot or restaurant, they get to see what other users have said about that place and the content they have created, he said.

Adding support for Android was a natural next step because of the platform's increasing momentum. The iPhone OS and Android are way ahead of anything else in the smartphone market, according to Lennon.
