iPhone 4: Higher-res, new camera, better motion-sensing

The iPhone 4 will greatly increase the screen resolution over previous iPhones

At the company's World Wide Developers Conference held earlier today, Apple announced the iPhone 4, the latest generation in it's popular cell phone line due on June 24. New improvements include improved motion-sensing, the ability to show four times as many pixels as its predecessor, as well as an additional camera and a flash-camera utility.

While the new iPhone boasts plenty of additions like a second front-facing camera, an added flash for the rear camera, the ability to record HD video, and improved battery life, the new feature that may have the largest gaming impact is the addition of an in-phone gyroscope. In addition to the accelerometer present in the previous iterations of the iPhone, the gyroscope allows for more complex motion-sensing, which was shown in a demo of Jenga performed by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "We've tied the gyro, accelerometer, and GPS for six-axis motion sensing," Jobs said. "It's perfect for gaming."

The iPhone 4 will greatly increase the screen resolution over previous iPhones. Using a form of technology Apple is calling 'retina display.' Using this tech, the iPhone is able to show four time the amount of pixels in the same space as previous iPhones. The iPhone 4 boasts the ability to show 326 pixels per inch, which is larger than what the human eye can even decipher, according to Jobs. In addition to quadrupling the resolution to 960x640, the iPhone 4 will also have four times the contrast ratio at 800:1.

New iPhone games shown at the keynote included the debut of Guitar Hero as well as Facebook phenomenon Farmville. The former is now available for US$3 in the App Store, while the latter did not have a release date or price announced. Speaking of release date and price, the iPhone 4 will be available on June 24 in white and black versions. The phone will come in a 16 GB model for $200 and a 32GB model for $300. Pre-orders for the phone will be available on June 15.

What do you guys think of the new iPhone? Anyone planning to upgrade or jump into the iPhone universe for the first time?
