Adobe shows off prototype tool for HTML5 animation

Adobe gives a sneak peek of its prototype HTML5 tool, codenamed "Edge."

Adobe uploaded a preview of its new (and perhaps overdue) prototype tool for HTML5 animation, codenamed "Adobe Edge" (not to be confused with Adobe's monthly newsletter) Monday.

Perhaps Adobe is looking to get into the HTML5 race, especially since Apple has made it pretty clear that they're not going to bend on the issue. HTML5 is the (still-in-development) next major revision of HTML, and has often been touted by Apple as an alternative to Adobe's Flash plug-in.

Adobe Fellow Mark Anders gives a five-minute demonstration of the new prototype -- notably not an actual tool yet. Anders notes the importance of being able to coordinate the movements of elements in HTML5, and states that Edge was designed with this importance in mind.

Edge is pretty basic thus far, with a few panes (Timeline, Layers, Properties) situated around a Stage area. In the Stage area you can see what you're designing and interact with it in the same way users will be able to interact with it on the Web.
