Pano Logic device offers more desktop virtualisation options

Zero client vendor provides more flexibility with

Pano Logic has launched a new version of its zero-client device, supporting video and Citrix virtualisation for the first time,

According to Parmeet Chaddha, VP of Engineering for Pano Logic, Pano System 4 will offer greater flexibility to desktop virtualisation customers. "For the first time, our customers will have the option of Citrix XenDesktop and as well as Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere. Our policy is to provide choice and our system means that users are not tied to a particular hypervisor vendor."

He said that the new device incorporated many requests from customers, particularly with regards to voice over IP, "VoIP was something that was much requested. They wanted to be able to use headphones with the appliances. In addition," he added, "customers will be able to use dual monitors for the first time and we have also introduced a fourth USB port."

A key aspect of the new device is an enhanced service offering. "We've created a free version of support, this includes all software upgrades for a year," said Chaddha. "After that, upgrades are available at just $20 a seat," he added.

The device will continue to offer low levels of power consumption, said Chaddha. "At only 6w per appliance, the power cionsumption is by an order of magnitude better than any PC."

Pano Logic's zero client approach has been warmly praised by analysts. "For years, customers have hesitated to embrace desktop virtualisation while the major vendors battle over protocols, standards and architectures that force companies to lock into a vendor instead of a business strategy," said John Abbott, chief architect of The 451 Group. "Pano Logic removes most of this customer risk and complexity with its zero client open architecture approach.
