LG has lodged an Australian trade mark application for the Optimus G Pro Android smartphone, despite continuing to deny the device will be released in Australia.
First discovered by Australian trade mark blog TM Watch, the trade mark application was lodged on Thursday 11 April for the word "LG Optimus G Pro" and subsequent logo.
The trade mark application is currently marked as "indexing approved" and is lodged under the Class 9 category. The description of this category covers a number of portable devices including "telephone sets", "portable communications apparatus", and "mobile phones".
The Australian trade mark application for the LG Optimus G Pro comes after LG told <i>PC World Australia</i> back in January that the device would not be sold Down Under.
"The Optimus G Pro is a Japanese model for the Japanese market and is different from the Optimus G Pro that will soon be launched in Korea, despite the same name." "However, the Optimus G Pro is not planned for release in the Australian market."
PC World Australia contacted LG again to discuss the trade mark application, but a company spokesperson refused to comment, only issuing the same generic statement.
"The Optimus G Pro is not planned for release in the Australian market. We will of course update you if this changes."
The Optimus G Pro is an upgrade to the original Optimus G, which LG launched exclusively through Telstra back in March.
In addition to a larger screen with a higher resolution, the LG Optimus G Pro has a bigger battery (3000mAh compared to 2100mAh) and a faster processor (1.7GHz compared to 1.5GHz) than the Optimus G, though it's 15g heavier and slightly thicker.
LG currently sells the Optimus G Pro in Japan through Japanese telco NTT Docomo, while the device launches through AT&T in the US on Friday 10 May.
