The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is "hoping" to make its catch up TV service, iView, available on Android smartphones and tablets by the end of 2013.
The network announced the update of its Android app earlier this week, claiming to bring it in line with the iOS version.
However, access to ABC's catch up iView service, freely available on the iOS app for both iPad and iPhone devices, is still not available on Android.
ABC TV's Multi-platform Controller, Arul Baskaran, said the delay of iView on Android comes down to "distribution and content requirements."
"Android is a very high priority on our agenda. We are still working on some of the distribution and content requirements, and hope to make iView work on Android by the end of the year."
ABC claimed earlier this week that the Android app update was driven by a "large shift" to Google's popular mobile platform over the past year.
The network says that Android users now represent 35 per cent of all mobile browsers on ABC's Web site.
The new ABC Android app allows to watch live streams of ABC News 24 and see upcoming programs on ABC 1, 2, and 3 channels.
ABC's Innovation Head of Mobile and Online, Mark Dando, says it plans to regularly update the Android app, including optimising it to work on larger screened Android tablets.
"We are planning to make regular releases coordinated across iOS and Android. One of the first updates will offer an interface optimised for Android tablet users."
Dando also addressed some negative user reviews of the app on Google's Play Store, with many users complaining about slow load times and poor performance.
"The first time our new ABC Android app loads takes a little time in order to update all 23 categories. Once the app is open, users don’t have to wait for more category pages to load as they swipe.""Loading time will vary depending on user’s network connectivity and speed."
Other new features of the 3.0.2 version of the app include the ability to view radio and TV content, and a 'Wake up with the ABC' alarm clock that allows users to wake up to an ABC TV or radio program.
The new ABC Android app currently works with smartphones running Android 2.2 (Froyo) and above and is available now from the Google Play Store.
