Apple testing a 13-inch iPad and larger iPhone

Prototypes suggest Apple will increase iPad and iPhone sizes

Apple is reportedly testing a new iPad with a 13in screen and larger displays for the iPhone.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has been making prototypes of its iPad tablet and iPhone smartphone with larger screens. Whether these bigger sized will arrive in the iPad 5 and/or iPhone 6 is unclear.

"The Cupertino, Calif., company routinely tests different designs for its products as it refines them during development." said the WSJ.

The iPhone 5 has a 4in screen but Apple is looking at larger screen sizes which would bring it more in line with most smartphones on the market today like the HTC One, Sony Xperia Z and Samsung Galaxy S4. Even BlackBerry is set to launch a phone with a 5in screen, the A10.

The iPad has always had 9.7in display but the firm is supposedly trying out a laptop size of 13in. Tablets typically max out at 10.1in so this would make for an, er, interesting new size.

Although Apple may well be testing bigger screens for the iPad and iPhone, the models which are expected to launch in the coming months are likely to use the same screen sizes and resolutions. Production of the iPad 5 will supposedly be ramped up later this month. It will allegedly have a thinner and lighter design thanks largely to a slimmer screen.

It's still unknown whether Apple will launch an iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S, or even both. Rumour has it that the new iPhone will also arrive with a cheaper version clad in a plastic shell rather than aluminium. Multiple colours will be on offer for both models.
