Google has today begun selling its new Nexus 7 in selected Australian retail stores, but has not yet opened online sales through the Google Play Store.
The company announced this morning that the new Nexus 7 Wi-Fi models are on sale now through "a number" of Australian retailers including JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Dick Smith.
The 16GB Wi-Fi model of the new Nexus 7 will sell for $299, while the 32GB Wi-Fi model is available for $339, a price hike of $50 and $40, respectively, compared to the existing model.
Last year's Nexus 7, still on sale both online and through Australian retailers, currently costs $249 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model, and $299 for the 32GB Wi-Fi model.
Google confirmed that only Wi-Fi models of the new Nexus 7 will be sold through retail outlets in Australia. A 32GB Wi-Fi+LTE Nexus 7 model is priced at $439 in Australia, but a Google spokesperson said there was "nothing to announce" about its availability.
"In terms of availability, it's just in retailers from tomorrow. There is nothing to announce about online sales or the LTE model at the moment."
A visit to the Australian Nexus 7 site still lists the device as "coming soon", and only last year's model is currently available to purchase at the time of writing.
Google said the new Nexus 7 models should should start appearing in retail stores from today, and will keep rolling out over the next week.
The Australian retail launch of the new Nexus 7 comes just over a month after Google officially unveiled the device globally. While it retains the same name as its predecessor, the new 7in tablet features a slightly different design and has a host of upgraded specifications, headed by a full HD display.
The display is a significant upgrade over its predecessors 1280x800 screen, and the Apple iPad mini's 1024x768 resolution and offers a pixel density of 323ppi.
The tablet is also 2mm thinner than its predecessor (8.65mm), weighs 50g lighter (290g) and includes a 5-megapixel rear-camera, a feature that wasn't present on the original model.
