Vodafone 4G goes live in Tasmania

Telco’s LTE network crosses the Strait nine months after its inception

Vodafone has turned on its 4G (LTE) network in parts of Tasmania.

Customers in West Moonah, Cambridge, New Norfolk, Warrane, and Hobart Airport now have access the service. According to the telecommunications provider, the rollout follows “successful live trials in recent weeks.”

The next phase of the rollout, scheduled for “the coming months,” will see Vodafone launch 4G sites in the Hobart CBD, Bridgewater, Claremont, Howrah, Huonville, Kingston, Lauderdale, Richmond, Sandfly, Sorell, and Mt Faulkner.

“We have a long history in this state where our customer-care centre has been based for more 15 years,” Vodafone chief technology officer (CTO), Benoit Hanssen, said. “Late last year we also opened a second call centre in the Hobart CBD.”

“This is a launch I am especially proud of as our excellent Tassie team call me regularly to ask when we are going to switch it on.”

Vodafone’s 4G network, which operates on its largely vacant 1800MHz band, first went live in June 2013 in selected metro areas of Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Newcastle, and Wollongong.

Earlier this month, the telco said it is accelerating its 4G rollout, claiming to be adding more than 100 new 4G sites across the nation each month, with plans to accelerate to 300 per month “later in the year.”
