The storage company launched the Backup Plus Fast, a portable 4TB drive with improved transfer speeds, and the Backup Plus, the slimmest 2TB portable drive on the market. The event was held at Eastern Creek Raceway to reiterate these new storage drives are fast.
The Backup Plus Fast combines two 2TB drives in a RAID 0 configuration to deliver transfer speeds of 220 megabytes per second (MB/s). Not only has Seagate managed to increase the drive’s performance, but the company has managed to do so while shrinking it down in size.
"As drives get bigger, we have to make sure they get faster so you're not sitting there waiting,” said senior Seagate engineer Sam Zavaglia.
The Backup Plus Fast ditches restrictive mains powerpoints in favour of ordinary computer USB ports. “It is the only 4TB drive on the market today that is portable. There’s no need for a power supply,” Zavaglia said during a private presentation.
Both Windows and OS X computer operating systems are supported by the Backup Plus Fast.
The storage company also announced the release of the new Backup Plus, the slimmest 2TB portable drive available today. The new Backup Plus range is characterised by coloured metal casing that is also resistant to scratches.
The new drives can back-up content from your computer to schedule, and will wirelessly back up the content from your iOS or Android smartphone. Content from Facebook and Flickr can also be copied to the drive, in addition to data stored on DropBox and Google Drive.
Existing customers won’t have to upgrade their drives for the new features. Version 3.0 of the Seagate dashboard can be downloaded by existing customers at no extra cost.
Seagate’s 4TB Backup Plus Fast drive is available from select retailers for $409, while the 2TB Backup Plus has a recommended retail price of $189.
