Nokia Australia launches cheap and cheerful Lumia 630

First smartphone to run Windows Phone 8.1

Microsoft-owned Nokia aims to build its Windows Phone market share with the launch of the cheap Lumia 630. The smartphone will compete against the popular Motorola Moto G when it goes on sale from the 27 of May for $249.

The 4.5in smartphone has a 480x800 resolution screen for a density of 207 pixels-per-inch. Inside is a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. A memory card slot supporting microSDXC cards can expand storage by a further 64GB.

Nokia has managed to shave the price down by only equipping the Lumia 630 with a rear camera. The 5MP camera can record videos in high definition (720p) at 30 frames per second.

The Lumia 630 will support the faster 3G band with HSDPA connectivity.

Nokia’s Lumia 630 will be sold by Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Dick Smith and Officeworks from the 27 May for $249. Telco Vodafone will offer the Lumia 630 for $179 on prepaid as of the 4 June. Good Gear Guide is awaiting confirmation from Vodafone on whether the smartphone will be locked to the network.

Correction, 19 May: The Lumia 630 being launched in Australia will not be the dual-SIM version.
