Motorola Moto X: On sale "next week" from $749

Brace yourself: Sustainable wood is coming to a Motorola smartphone near you.

Motorola will be taking on the titans from Samsung, Apple and Sony with the release of its Moto X flagship in Australia. The innovative smartphone will go on sale for $749 from retailers next week.

Carriers will not sell the second generation Moto X for reasons that were not disclosed.

Not stocking the Moto X with carriers bypasses lengthy software testing cycles. This means Motorola customers won’t have to wait months to receive the latest version of Android software.

Two versions of the 16GB Motorola Moto X will be available. A black resin variant will retail for $749, while another finished in sustainable wood will go on sale for $789. Motorola did not specify which retailers will stock the smartphone.

The smartphone will rival the flagships from Samsung, HTC, Sony and Apple, with its 5.2in display packing a Full HD resolution and a density of 423 pixels-per-inch.

The Moto X introduces a number of innovations, such as a custom processor, a fast charge battery, a ring flash, water resistance and the use of exotic materials, such as a metal chassis and sustainable wood.

Motorola’s flagship can perform hands-free Voice Searches as it features two additional speech processors: one dedicated to natural language and another dedicated to context.

These processors are in addition to a 2.5GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM and storage options of 16GB and 32GB.

The 2300 milliamp-hour battery can deliver 8 hours of battery life from just 15 minutes of charge, claims Motorola.

Completing the feature set is a rear 13 megapixel camera, which is capable of recording videos in the nascent UHD resolution.

News of the Moto X launching comes as Motorola launches its first smartwatch, the Moto G, in Australia.
