Android NFC payments switched on at Commonwealth Bank

Sony, HTC, LG, Motorola and more smartphones can now make contactless payments

Shoppers with the Commonwealth Bank will be able to use their Android smartphones to make tap-and-go style payments.

Payments below $100 can be made with a single tap of NFC-capable smartphones running Android 4.4 KitKat and above.

Most banks in Australia support tap-and-go payments from only select Samsung Galaxy devices.

Other manufacturer smartphones could be used with the Commonwealth Bank by affixing an NFC-capable sticker. The unattractive sticker was needed even if the smartphone already had NFC technology in built.

Negating the need for unflattering stickers is the bank’s adoption of host card emulation technology (HCE).

Simplifying mobile payments will continue to drive its adoption, said Angus Sullivan, the executive general manager consumer finance payments.

“We are providing Android customers with a real mobile wallet solution which simplifies payments on-the-go.”

Contactless payments under $100 account for more than 60 per cent of MasterCard transactions.
