Jump the line for the newest Chromecast features with Google's new preview program

Google hasn't said what's coming yet, but if you sign up for the initiative you'll be part of the group that's in the know.

Google has launched a new preview program for Chromecast and Chromecast Audio that lets you try out the newest firmware before it goes official.

A help forum post details the program, which you can sign up for through the Google Cast app. To get going, launch the Android or iOS app and tap Devices. Then touch the overflow button (three vertical dots) and select Device settings. From there, select Preview Program and then you can agree to join it.

Google says you’ll get email updates when there’s new firmware available for you. The help page also details that this is not a beta program, so your software should be rather stable and ready to use. You’re just getting it before everyone else.

The impact on you: Chromecast is the easiest way to get video from a phone, tablet, or computer to your TV. Chromecast Audio pulls a similar trick for music, making the hardware a nice and affordable duo for streaming. It’ll be worth watching what new software rolls out and how Google plans to use these devices to further shape television and listening habits.
