Boom: SanDisk just dropped the world's largest SD card

The company doubles its previous largest SD card capacity with a 1TB version.

Who needs a delete button? SanDisk on Tuesday morning showed off the world’s largest SDXC card with a whopping 1TB of storage. Yes, terabyte.

SanDisk unveiled the 1TB SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC card to kick off the first day of the European photography show Photokina. The new card essentially doubles the capacity of the largest SDXC cards available today.

“Sixteen years ago we introduced the first SanDisk 64MB SD card and today we are enabling capacities of 1TB,” said SanDisk’s Dinest Bahal.

Those who need this kind of capacity in a camera, video camera, or drone will have to wait, however. SanDisk used a prototype of the card for its demo and the company didn’t know when the card would actually be available for sale.

Pictures of the card supplied to the media before the demo featured a “sanitized” card, without any indications of its speed. The card’s “SDXC I” logo provides a hint, however, as those cards are known to hit transfer rates of 50MBps or 104MBps. It also bears the Extreme Pro branding, which is SanDisk’s top-shelf line, so performance should be fairly good.

And no, we don’t know the price either. When asked, the company said it would “depend on market conditions when released.”

A 512GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC card on Amazon retails for $275, so one that’s double the capacity won’t cost peanuts.
