Find My iPhone helps nab a thief at Coachella with 100 phones in his backpack

Dude, not cool, man.

The biggest bummer at a festival like Coachella should be a spilled beer or a long bathroom line, not having your iPhone stolen by a highly ambitious but also bumbling criminal. Awful person Reinaldo De Jesus Henao found himself in handcuffs on Easter Sunday, arrested with more than 100 smartphones in his backpack, nabbed with the help of Find My iPhone.

According to reports by KMIR and Consequence of Sound, victims noticed their phones missing and quickly used Find My iPhone on their friends’ phones to actually locate 36-year-old Henao still at the festival. The victims followed the suspect and alerted security, who was able to hold him until police arrived.

At the time of his arrest, Henao had more than 100 smartphones in his backpack, which is at least 98 more than any person should need. Some of the phones are still waiting to be reunited with their owners in Coachella’s lost and found (which is online and glorious).

Henao was charged with grand theft and receiving stolen property, and released on $10,000 bail. But he’s going to have a hard time explaining away the photo of 100 phones spread out on the evidence table, which you can see for yourself at CoS.

Moral of the story? Turn on Find My iPhone! It’s in Settings > iCloud, and it’s saved a lot of people’s bacon over the years. Just be sure to turn it off and sign out of your iCloud account before you sell or give away the phone. And be careful out there, Coachella kids.
