Oppo tease biometric and camera innovations ahead of MWC 2019

As teased earlier in the week, Oppo have shown off new innovations at their 2019 Future Technology Communication Conference that'll allow them to bring 10x optical zoom and more advanced in-display fingerprint sensors to future devices.

The conference saw the company showcase a new triple-lens smartphone camera setup that consists of an Ultra Wide Angle, Ultra Clear Master and Telephoto lens.

Building on the work of Oppo's previous 5x zoom smartphone camera (shown at MWC 2017), the new hardware allows for an effective 10x optical zoom - well beyond even that offered by Huawei's flagship P20 and Mate 20 Pro smartphones.

The only catch here is that Oppo have yet to commit or comment on any sort of timeline for bringing this camera configuration to market. Their previous 5x zoom smartphone never made it into a single consumer-grade product. Time will tell whether this new 10x zoom setup suffers the same fate.

The other major technological advancement being talked up at the conference is Oppo's new "wide zone" optical fingerprint recognition technology.

Functionally, this works similarly to the in-screen fingerprint sensor found in the R17 Pro. However, rather than be restricted to tapping on a specific part of the display, the new tech will allow users to unlock their phone by tapping their fingerprint to any part of the display.

Oppo say that devices equipped with the fingerprint technology will be available in 2019.

Oppo Australia Managing Director Michael Tran said “We pride ourselves on investing heavily in research and development to improve and innovate smartphone camera capabilities. Achieving a true lossless zoom has been a challenge for any smartphone on the market, and we are really excited to introduce this innovative solution and further evolve smartphone camera technology.”

“We are very excited to be kicking off 2019 with a new addition to our breakthrough innovations in smartphone and camera technology. In 2018, we introduced new camera technologies including the 3D Stealth Camera in the Find X, Ultra Night Mode on the R17 Pro, and AI camera capabilities in a number of our devices. We look forward to continuing to explore new technologies and provide Aussies with unique camera innovations throughout 2019.”

Expect more news to come at this year's Mobile World Congress, set to to kick off on the 25th of February in Barcelona.
