Google has officially begun laying the groundwork for the arrival of their next set of Google Pixel smartphones.

According to a new teaser on the official Google Store website, "something big is coming to the Pixel universe" on May 8th.

Google's annual I/O developer conference is due to kick off on the 8th - so expect the announcement to come from that direction. Two new smartphones are expected to be announced: the Google Pixel 3a and Google Pixel 3a XL.

These new spin-off devices are said to offer the camera and software perks of owning a Google Pixel at a more affordable price-point - which is far from a terrible pitch. Google's previous Pixel devices have been great - but they've remained exclusively in the flagship pricing tier that sees them up against fare like the iPhone XS and Samsung Galaxy S10.

According to 9to5Google, the mainline Pixel 3a will feature a 5.6-inch OLED display Snapdragon 670 processor, 4GB of RAM plus a 12-megapixel rear camera and 3000mAh battery. The Pixel 3a XL is expected to offer a larger 6-inch OLED display but otherwise the differences between the two devices are expected to be minimal.

9to5Google claim both devices will offer the "squeezable" Active Edge tech the Pixel 2 inherited from HTC, 64GB of on-board storage and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Look for more info when Google I/O 2019 takes place on the 8th of May.
