Celerons as cheap as chips

The price cuts follow the launch last week of the new 533MHz Celeron chip, which was introduced at $US167, a price that has not changed.

The 500MHz Celeron dropped 10 per cent in price, to $128. The 466MHz and 433MHz versions each dropped 5 per cent, to $89 and $69, respectively, Intel said. The price of the 400MHz Celeron remained unchanged, at $64.

All prices are for 1000-unit quantities. Intel said the price cuts, which were effective January 9, are part of its normal pricing activity.

Intel's Celeron processors are aimed at the sub-$1200 PC category, where analysts say price and clock speed are among buyers' top concerns. Its Pentium II and Pentium III chips are aimed at more expensive systems.
