The Viewsonic PJ760 is an LCD projector and jack of all trades. It is considered a business projector due to its 4:3 aspect ratio, but the wide range of AV ports makes it robust enough for video projection too. Unfortunately, with all this potential, including ability to accept 1080p video, the projector has visual flaws that relegate it to the middle of the pack behind high-end units in both the home theatre and business spaces.
The major problem with this projector is the overt dot pitch (the space between each pixel). On the PJ760 this space is too large which causes a flyscreen effect and a degree of pixelation and clarity loss. This is a common problem on many mid- to low-end LCD projectors and tends to hamper image quality across all modes. When watching videos or playing games on the projector, we could see the flyscreen clearly and when connected to a PC, text and icons were hard to read at high resolutions due to pixelation and a noisy dithering effect on edges.
When watching AV sources, we were quite impressed with the image quality, despite the flyscreening. The colours were excellent and the contrast showed no signs of stepping. There was no excessive motion blur or ghosting suggesting the internal TFT LCD chip is running at a fast response rate. The native resolution is 1024x768 but the projector can accept everything from 576i to 1080p via a component connection and up to 1600x1200 on the PC connection. If connected to a PC, we suggest connecting at the native resolution as the higher resolutions experienced more visual aberrations.
To facilitate the multimedia use of the PJ760, it comes with an integrated 70W speaker. While it is only meant to provide basic audio support, the speaker actually produced quite good sound considering its size and solitude. It is no match for a home theatre setup but will come in handy if you are using the projector in the boardroom especially if your presentation includes sound.
The throw distance and image size is quite good with a 30in image being produced from the minimum distance of 90cm and a 300in image being projected from the maximum distance of 9m. The internal fan is quite noisy at default mode, but there is a whisper mode that can be accessed via the remote control which turns it down considerably. Heat isn't a major issue with this projector either, despite using a bright 3200 Lumens bulb.
