Telstra develops its first Android app

Releases NRL app

Telstra has begun developing applications for Google's Android mobile operating system, starting with a video-on-demand National Rugby League (NRL) application.

The Official Telstra NRL App – which includes NRL news and match reviews, along with video highlights and archived content – is just the first of many Android-based applications that will be developed by Telstra according to the company's head of mobile applications, Billy Byrne.

"The Android scene has a great buzz about it worldwide although Australia has still some catching up to do. Watch this space closely as you should see Telstra doing lots of exciting things with Android in the near future," Byrne wrote on the telco's Exchange blog earlier this month.

The Official Telstra NRL App costs $5.99 and can be downloaded from the Android Market.

Telstra yesterday revealed that customers who bought the HTC Desire from the telco would receive Android's 2.2 software update, "Froyo", within weeks.
