Vodafone drops Galaxy S price to $29, S II on the way?

What was once an expensive, high-end Android smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S, is now available from Vodafone from a paltry $29 per month, which could mean the second-generation Galaxy S II is set to make an appearance at the carrier.

Vodafone announced on its blog the Galaxy S is now available for $0 up front on the $29 cap or the $45 Infinite plan. Both plans are for 24 months.

“If ever you wanted the Samsung Galaxy S, this would probably be the best time to consider getting one,” wrote the Vodafone blogger.

The price reduction for the Samsung Galaxy S is possibly in preparation for the Galaxy S II which Samsung has already demonstrated down under.

Some websites are flagging June this year as the likely release month for the S II, so we’d be surprised if it wasn’t launched on Vodafone around that time.

Samsung has indicated we will see the phone sometime in the second quarter 2011.

The Galaxy S originally shipped with Android 2.1, but and update to Android 2.2 is now available. The dual-core S II, however, ships with Android 2.3 “Gingerbread”.

Announced at the Mobile World Congress earlier this year the Galaxy S II was proclaimed as the "world's thinnest smartphone" and can shoot full HD video.

Earlier this year Vodafone and Samsung announced the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android ‘Honeycomb’ tablet will launch exclusively on the network, confirming the good relationship between the two companies.

Vodafone has set up a page on its website for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 but it was a broken link and the time of writing.

In other Vodafone news, the telco has started offering the Samsung Nexus S Android smartphone with free Skype calls over its network.

The Skype offer is available on the $65, $85 and $100 Infinite plans where “infinite” Skype-to-Skype calls can be made with the Skype on Vodafone app until May 31.

The Nexus S is one of the first handsets available in Australia shipping with version 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ pre-loaded.

Vodafone announced the availability of the Nexus S last month.
