Australian Mobile Virtual Network Operator Amaysim has today unveiled a low cost, unlimited mobile plan that has no lock-in contracts.

The Amaysim unlimited plan provides unlimited calls, SMS, MMS and voicemail access within Australia, along with 4GB of data for $39.90 per month. It also includes unlimited access to social networking services including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Myspace and eBay.

The Amaysim unlimited plan comes with a 30-day commitment and can be paid for via post-paid or pre-paid options. Customers can choose to cancel their Amaysim service at any time without penalty, or switch to the existing Amaysim 'as you go' plan, which was unveiled in November last year.

Founder and CEO Rolf Hansen says the Amaysim unlimited plan was brought about due to customer research, and aims to combat the "cap confusion" of existing competitor plans.

"So-called cap deals with bonus minutes and free money are being used to entice consumers but in many cases they simply don't translate into the best value," he said. "The new Amaysim unlimited plan is designed to address this issue and give consumers what they want — low price calls and texts and lots of data, all within Australia."

Hansen also says that the company is transparent about what services will cost extra, with 1300 and 1800 numbers (29c per minute), premium SMS (varied), satellite calls (from $1.30 per minute), international calls (varied), international roaming (from $1 per minute) and video calls (49c per minute) all extra services. Additional data for the Amaysim unlimited plan is charged at 5c per megabyte, or can be purchased in 1GB increments for $9.90 each. Customers will also receive automatic SMS alerts when users reach 75 per cent, 90 per cent and 100 per cent of the 4GB allowance.

Amaysim says the 4GB data inclusion can freely be used for tethering, a method to share the Internet connection of an Internet-capable smartphone, usually through a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. However, this will initially not work with Apple's iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 due to "technical issues". Amaysim says it is currently working with Apple to provide this service in the future, but did not reveal a timeframe.

The Amaysim unlimited plan is currently available for purchase on its website for $5 and at retail locations including Woolworths, Coles, Harvey Norman, Caltex, Australia Post and 7 Eleven outlets for $2.
