Following the unveiling of its multi-band, 2300Mhz TD-LTE 4G network last month, telecommunications provider, Optus, has publicly launched the network and the first compatible devices in Canberra.
The service had been on trial in the city through a customer prior to public availability.
Canberra is the first city with open access to the technology, with 13 sites located across the capital. According to Optus, coverage is available in selected parts of the city centre, although it plans to progressively expand to more than 50 locations over the second half of the year.
“Customers will need compatible devices that operate on the new technology in Canberra, but these 4G dual-band devices will integrate with our existing 4G network in other cities and our 3G network nationally,” Optus networks managing director, Guenther Ottendorfer, said.
The compatible devices include the Optus E3276 v2 4G dual-band USB dongle and E5776 Wi-Fi modem. Canberra residents can get their hands on these via Optus’ retail stores, online, and through telesales.
These are available on a selection of post- and pre-paid services, pictured below.
“As part of Optus’ ongoing network rollout, we are aiming to expand coverage of our integrated 4G network to 70 per cent of Australia’s metro population by mid-2014,” Ottendorfer said. “Many of our mobile sites will be upgraded to support Optus 4G dual-band compatible devices…”
