Vodafone turns on 4G

Claims speeds can reach up to 100Mbps

Telecommunications provider, Vodafone, has launched its own 4G network, claiming “demonstrated trial speeds” of up to 100Mbps.

Operating on the 1800MHz band, the service is available in selected metro areas of Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Newcastle, and Wollongong.

Existing customers with an eligible smartphone and plan are able to access Vodafone 4G immediately, whereas new customers will be able to join from next month.

Vodafone chief executive officer (CEO), Bill Morrow, claims the telco has invested heavily in its 3G and 3G+ networks, and promises its 4G service will give customers “access to speeds that are among the fastest not only in the country but in many parts of the world.”

“We’ve been single-minded in our determination to improve our network, enhance our customer service and offer the best value mobile services in the country,” Morrow said.

While this is the promise, the reality is dependent on many factors, including congestion, time of day, location, hardware, software, and more, as Vodafone carefully notes at the conclusion of its media statement.

The telco said its wide-band 4G network is set to treble by the end of 2013.

Earlier this month, Vodafone announced it is shutting down the ‘3 Mobile’ brand as part of the final stages of the merger.

In May, the telco announced plans to increase regional coverage with 1200 new network sites across the country to be switched on from July.
