Apple has unveiled its second generation iPad mini tablet, now called the iPad mini with Retina display

Apple has unveiled its second generation iPad mini tablet, now called the iPad mini with Retina display. The device retains a similar look and feel to its predecessor, but the big upgrade is obviously a long requested retina display.

The iPad mini's retina display has a resolution of 2048x1536, the same as the company's larger iPad Air. The display is a huge upgrade from its predecessors 1024x768 resolution, and gives the new tablet a pixel density of 326ppi.

The iPad mini with Retina display is powered by Apple's new 64-bit A7 processor. Apple says it offers up to four times the CPU performance, and up to eight times the graphics performance compared to the original iPad mini. The new iPad mini also has an M7 motion co-processor, just like the iPhone 5s.

Interestingly, the iPad mini with Retina display is slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor. It measures 7.5mm thick compared to 7.2mm, and the Wi-Fi only version weighs 331g compared to the previous model's 308g. The Wi-Fi+LTE model tips the scales at 341g compared to 312g.

The Apple iPad mini with Retina display will be available to purchase in Australia and New Zealand from "later in November" but Apple hasn't yet announced an official release date. It will be available in a total of eight variants — 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models in Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi+LTE configurations.

Pricing is more expensive than the previous model in Australia and is as follows. Pricing in New Zealand is to be confirmed.
