SteelSeries already has its Sensei range of mice aimed at gamers, but is now expanding its portfolio with the Rival gaming mouse.
This SteelSeries gaming mouse comes with the bells and whistles that the Danish peripheral manufacturer includes in all its products, though it comes in a slightly different form factor to set it apart from the Sensei line-up.
Aesthetics
The Rival has a mostly symmetrical exterior that is not too different from the shape of most mainstream mice. Regardless of the symmetrical design, the mouse is designed for right-handed orientation.
The mouse measures 45x70x133mm and weighs 128g. The Rival is wired, so it comes with a 2m long USB cable.
The exterior has a smooth, matte finish with an anti-sweat coating. There are rubber grips on the sides to help the thumb and ring finger stay in place during use.
The buttons use SteelSeries’ own switches that the company says are designed to last for over 30 million clicks. The switches deliver an audible yet subtle click when pressed.
Sensor and customisation
A Pixart PMW3310 sensor is used for the mouse’s optics. The sensor is capable of a one millisecond response rate while the counts per inch (CPI) are adjustable from 50 to 6500.
The Rival has four individual feet attached to the base. Combined with the light weight of the mouse, the rubber feet enable the mouse to glide easily along most surfaces.
Button functionality and illumination of the Rival are controlled via the included SteelSeries Engine 3 software. As an added bonus, the nameplate on the mouse can be replaced with a personalised one created with a 3D printer.
The SteelSeries Rival is available now from leading retailers for $79.99.
