Sony's Xperia C4 ups the selfie ante, launching in Australia

A 5MP front camera complete with LED flash

Following the global no-show of Sony’s Z4 flagship is the global unveiling of the Xperia C4, a phablet lacking in tough credentials, but one versed in the art of the ‘selfie’.

Update, 11am: Sony Mobile has confirmed to Good Gear Guide the C4 will be launched in Australia.

The Xperia C4 is a large smartphone with a screen spanning 5.5-inches. It has a resolution of 1920x1080, a 401 pixel-per-inch density and it inherits software from the company’s BRAVIA televisions.

Separating this smartphone from the wave of recent releases is a high resolution front camera complete with its own LED flash. The front 5-megapixel camera has a 28mm wide angle lens to fit more people in a photo.

Photos taken with the rear camera will be 13 megapixels in size.

The Xperia C4 will run the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system, Android 5.0 Lollipop, and it will be powered by a MediaTek octa-core CPU running at 1.7GHz. Memory includes 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and compatibility with microSD cards up to 128GBs in size.

Powering the 4G smartphone is a 2600 milliamp-hour battery.

The smartphone’s announcement follows the unveiling of Sony’s Xperia Z4 in Japan only weeks ago. Sony has not shared plans to release its flagship in overseas markets.

The Xperia C4 has a better chance of launching locally based on the following official statement:
