Printers come in all shapes and sizes. In fact, there’s a plethora of them out there - each with its own claim to fame for your hard-earned cash. The hardest thing can be sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Brother’s MFC-L9570CDW Multifunction claims to be able to handle the biggest workload efficiently and reliably and to work seamlessly with your systems and software. Any printer that does that is worth its weight in gold as far as I’m concerned.

The MFC-L9570CDW looks good both on paper - it prints, scans, copies and faxes - and in reality, and boasts impressive print and scan speeds, a user-friendly, large 17.6cm LCD touchscreen, and can be configured, through the use of up to 64 shortcuts, to customise work practices.

With USB, wireless and wired connectivity, the MFC-L9570CDW’s multi-functionality aims to help businesses run as efficiently as possible. And it certainly helped ours.

So how did it stack up when we put it through its paces? Firstly, it passed the size test. Some of those printers out there are so much chunk for a lot of funk but the Brother fitted perfectly in the small space we had available.

It also lived up to the claims of its maker when it came to multitasking and efficiency. Given the fast pace of our office, we require quick and reliable printing at short notice. The printer was responsive and excellent at meeting that demand, and didn’t have any inconvenient paper jams. There is nothing worse than getting half-way through 25 copies of a 150-page document and everything grinds to a halt. There were no such problems with the Brother.

Given its small size, the MFC-L9570CDW completed each printing job with the minimum of fuss and at a more than healthy pace – it has fast print speeds of up to 31ppm and two-sided (duplex) scan speeds of 100ipm in colour and monochrome.

Did the printed output look good? Yes, it did! The quality of the print was fabulous. The images in printing and scanning didn’t have any annoying spots.

Importantly, the paper input with its 300-sheet capacity didn’t need refilling constantly and while it did need attention more frequently than our bigger office printer it wasn’t an inconvenience.

We are also very security conscious. Given we are a legal practice, all the documents that are printed or scanned in the office are of a confidential nature so it is vital we maintain that confidentiality in every way. The MFC-L9570CDW comes with Secure Function Lock 3.0, Active Directory Authentication, Internet Protocol Security (IPsec), 802.1x and Secure Print which helps maintain that confidentiality and gave me some peace of mind.

The final big test as far as we were concerned was functionality. There is nothing worse than a printer that requires a ‘huddle of minds’ to work out how to use it. The printer needs to be intuitive and capable of being operated by everybody in the office.

Brother’s MFC-L9570CDW is very user-friendly. The 17.6cm screen was large enough to see buttons clearly, and to display plenty of information and options for printing, scanning and copying. The fact it was a colour touchscreen made it easy to navigate. I imagine an office junior could easily operate the various functions of the printer with little to no training.

Is there a downside to this printer? If I had to be picky, I’d say it wasn’t the quietest of printers at times, although it couldn’t be described as loud and it definitely didn’t emit any sort of irritating or undesirable sound.

The bottom line: The printer was convenient, produced clear and vibrant images and was very easy to use. I wouldn’t hesitate in giving it 5 stars. It made my job that bit easier over the last few weeks whilst trialling it.
