Battery Life

We used the G5 for navigation, games, apps and web browsing over a few days and found it comfortably lasted a full day and even went well into the next day too - impressive considering the modest 2,800mAh battery.

There’s also the TurboPower fast charge system too which can add hours of usage in just a few minutes.

Other features

Moto has added a hydrophobic coating to the G5. It’s not equivalent to an IPx certification, but being spill proof and rain proof is better than nothing.

We were particularly impressed with the Dual SIM function there are slots for two Nano SIMs plus a MicroSD card which can be used at the same time – along with the G5 Plus it’s the first time (in a while) that we’ve seen such a combo.

It’s also worth noting that the G5 has a removable battery which is something of a rarity these days.

Conclusion

At $299 this is the cheapest smartphone we’ve seen in a long while – even less than the $328 Oppo A57. Which would we rather have? Well, the Oppo has a better processor and 3GB of RAM. We’d also say that the cameras were slightly better too – especially the high-resolution selfie camera. It also comes with a free case.

But the G5’s screen is better both in terms of colour reproduction and resolution and the battery lasted about half-a-day longer. There’s really not much in it and casual users won’t really notice a difference. Both are great value phones, but the power boost offered by the Oppo should give it a slightly-longer lifespan.

It’s splitting hairs though. Ultimately, the Oppo is a good, mid-range phone at a bargain price point while this is a very-affordable, great-value budget phone.
