The Lens

So to the AF-P DX 10-20mm f4.5-5.6G VR, the only one of the three lenses recently released by Nikon that is designed for APS-C cameras like the D7500.

The ultra wide lens is being pushed as compact, lightweight and ideal for “sprawling landscapes and cityscapes, architecture, interiors or just beautiful group shots” - and it pretty much delivers on those lofty ambitions.

There are some people who will say that an ultra wide isn’t really a landscape or cityscape lens - too much foreground, lens flare and distortion that comes with shooting at 10mm or 12mm. At those settings you get a lot of extra stuff in the frame. And often that stuff in a landscape is dead space - great spreads of water or sky which can ruin a potentially lovely panoramic shot. The answer to that as you can see in our landscape shot of the harbour and city is crop intelligently. Using an ultra wide lens is all about adapting to your shooting environment. Get closer to things - look at the vertical shots of the building and the old viewing bunker. Both are sharp and good examples of what you can achieve with this lens. With this ultra wide use your imagination; experiment with the foreground and picture composition.

The 10-20mm lens sits well on the D7500 and is so light that you honestly don’t know you are carrying the set up around. Landscape and sunset shots were surprisingly sharp and detailed and challenged those from far more expensive lenses. The built-in flash is surprisingly effective especially when used with Scene Mode. Indoor shots at night were clear and punchy.

The lens also benefits from a close minimum focusing distance of just 22cm and Vibration Reduction. It worked well indoors without flash during daylight due to the flexibility of the D7500 and its ISO performance - although I would stick to settings under 6400 above which noise creeps in. it becomes very evident at 25,600 and beyond. Likewise detail tends to suffer above 6400.
