Pros

  • Good image quality
  • Lots of control

Cons

  • Not weatherproof
  • A lot of indirect costs (lenses, etc)

Bottom Line

The devil in the details - and the details are where the GX9 shines.

Performance

Still, as far as performance goes, we came away reasonably impressed with the GX9. Images were sharp and more than detailed enough to satisfy. However, we did have some minor quibbles with the auto-white balance on the camera, which sometimes left us with images that were a little washed out or overly warm.

Regardless, the level of quality here isn’t quite DSLR or mirrorless - not that it should be expected to be - but it’s definitely more than a few pegs above what you can probably get out of your iPhone. Across the board, you also have a lot more control here. The usual Lumix software and menu experience is present and accounted for. Again, while not everything you’d find in the more fully-featured G9 or GH5 is here, there is still a lot to mess with in terms of settings.

When it comes to sharing the images back to your PC or smartphone, you can go old-school and use a physical cable or pull out the SD-card. More modern users can also connect the camera to the Panasonic Image App and pull over content that way.

The Bottom Line

If you’ve already got a flagship like the Google Pixel or Huawei Mate 10 Pro at your disposal and don’t really care enough to want to take things to the next level, it does feel like you’d be best served sticking to your smartphone for now. However, if you’re a stickler for that extra, granular bit of detail or manual control that a smartphone camera just can’t provide, you’ll probably find a lot to like with the GX9.

Like I said before, the devil in the details - and those details are where the GX9 shines.
