Viewsonic's NextVision 27" Entertainment Display is a versatile LCD unit with superb computer and HDTV support. Easily configured, the NextVision is a relief for computer users looking for a large and capable multifunctional display without the large price tag.

The NextVision is available in two colours, black and silver, and the finish has a plastic look to it, although the chasis is a metal housing. Behind the back panel are the inputs, which include a SCART connection, Component Input, VGA, S-Video, Composite and general audio inputs. The internal 10 watt speakers support SRS virtual surround sound, and a headphone jack is available from the rear.

Configuring the panel is as easy as plugging in a source and flipping through the input selection via the remote. We were able to plug in computer sources at resolutions up to 1280x1024, although we found the widescreen format of 1280x720 to be the optimal resolution. Computer use aside, the TV functions are extensive, with several modes of Picture-In-Picture, automated tuning/diagnostics and optimisation.

Running off a PC, we found the Viewsonic monitor has an excellent picture. Text aliasing effects are minimal, even in a non-native resolution, although users will find the best results if their video card supports widescreen resolutions. In fast motion video, the monitor displayed little to no ghosting although the contrast ratio over a wide angle was not as solid as has been seen with other displays such as the Baumann Meyer DT2600. Viewing from obtuse angles, some colour shift was noticed, in which skin tones colours were not rendered uniformly. This would not be a problem for computer users who would tend to sit directly in front of the display, but TV viewers might find this to be distracting, especially at angles closer to the monitors specified limit of 130 degrees horizontal.

TV operation and external video looked exceptional using the HD component connection. As expected, video quality was reduced when running through the composite cable, and we advise users to avoid this at all costs. A SCART connection is also included, which combines audio and video into one cable, although the quality of SCART video is much lower than a component connection. Sound support was not as impressive as has been seen with other TV's we have reviewed. The sound was dull and lacked response in the high frequencies, for a better experience, a set of 5.1 speakers such as LG's LH-W750TA home theatre system is recommended.

Users looking for a large monitor with TV support who do not require the ultra high resolution found in monitors such as the Apple Cinema 30" should consider Viewsonic's N2750w - a high performance screen with a reasonable price tag.
