Sony Ericsson has announced its XPERIA Play Android phone — dubbed the 'PlayStation phone' — will launch on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone in May or June. The XPERIA Play promises an "immersive gaming experience" with 50 games available at launch.

Read our detailed preview of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play, and check our Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play vs Apple iPhone 4 smartphone showdown.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play features a 4in multitouch display, two touch-sensitive joysticks, a D-pad and four of the PlayStation's famous control buttons; triangle, square, circle and X. The XPERIA Play also has two shoulder buttons in a bid to recreate the full PlayStation experience.

PlayStation games on the XPERIA Play will be downloaded through the 'PlayStation Suite', an online PlayStation store for Android phones. Sony hopes the XPERIA Play will be the first of many "PlayStation certified" Android phones to hit the market; Sony will test each device that applies to become PlayStation certified, to ensure the phone will offer an adequate gaming experience to users.

Sony Ericsson will have 50 games available when the XPERIA Play launches, including FIFA 10, Tetris, Sims 3, Madden NFL 11, Need for Speed Shift, Assassins Creed, Uno, Real Football 2011, Nova 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

Although primarily targeted at gamers, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play acts as a regular Android smartphone when closed. It is powered by a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM, and will run the latest 2.3 Gingerbread version of Google's Android platform. Gingerbread offers a revamped keyboard, better copy and paste, improved power management, and a slicker user interface as improvements over previous versions of Android.
