Kogan’s $799 Galaxy S5 won’t support Australian 4G networks

It might be $130 less, but the discount comes at the support of 4G networks in Australia.

Kogan is offering the Samsung Galaxy S5 for $799 — that’s a whopping $130 less than retail. It is an impressive discount when you consider the smartphone hasn’t been released globally, but sometimes if a deal appears to be too good to be true, then it probably is.

The catch

The Galaxy S5 being sold for $799 from Kogan is the international G900I model. It differs from the model Samsung is releasing in Australia by coming with an eight-core CPU, and by snubbing support for faster 4G networks, Good Gear Guide has confirmed.

Customers who buy Kogan’s $799 Galaxy will have to rely on slower 3G networks. Not supporting 4G will also impact the Galaxy S5’s Download Booster feature, which combines the smartphone’s 4G modem with its Wi-Fi for faster download speeds.

Then there's the warranty. Whereas smartphones purchased from Australian retail stores will have a 24 month warranty covered by the manufacturer, the $799 Galaxy S5 will have a warranty only for 12 months covered by Kogan.

Kogan announced the Galaxy S5 pricing in a newsletter to subscribers, but the $799 price tag was appended to the quad-core version being released locally, and not the international version. Specifications for the HTC One (M8) were also incorrect.

Kogan is offering the quad-core version of the Galaxy S5, but not for the $799 price advertised in his newsletter. The online retailer will sell the Australian version of the Galaxy S5 for $849, which is still $80 less than Samsung’s recommended retail price.

Update, 10 Mar: Kogan has lowered the price of the 4G Samsung Galaxy.
